City Council considering new wage scale

The Smithville City Council moved a step closer to adopting its budget for the new fiscal year, Monday night. The major issue holding up passage of the budget has been the wage scale, which both Mayor Taft Hendrixson and several members of the council have had issues with. Mayor Hendrixson proposed a new wage chart, which if adopted, would take effect in the new fiscal year budget. Two more arrested in LSB hold-up

Two more people have been arrested in connection with the recent robbery of the Liberty branch office of Liberty State Bank. ESTES DeKalb County Sheriff Patrick Ray said Ricky Estes, 45, of Whorton Springs Road, Smithville, and Roxanna Landis, 26, of Andrews Street, Smithville, were both charged with aggravated robbery for their roles in the hold-up. Several local arrests made on various offenses

A number of arrests were made in recent days by both the Smithville Police Department and the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department.  Arrests made by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department and their charges include:  KNOWLES Scotty Wayne Knowles, 31, of Jacob’s Pillar Road, Smithville, was arrested on August 22 for a first offense of driving on a revoked license. Goodwin wins Happy Days 'Best of Show'

43 cars entered the field of competition during the first ever Happy Days Celebration, held this past Saturday on the public square to benefit DeKalb County Habitat for Humanity. Funeral services for Elsie Emaline Waldron Turner, 83, of Sparta were held Saturday, August 21, 2010, in the chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home in Smithville. Bro. Adam Scales and Bro. Dwight Knowles officiated, with burial following in the Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Ms. Turner died Thursday, August 19, at DeKalb Community Hospital. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. WJLE founder, Vanatta, dies

Dr. W.E. VANATTA The co-founder and long-time owner of WJLE Radio, Dr. Willius Eugene (W.E.) Vanatta, died at his residence, last Thursday morning after a short illness. He was 91 years of age, just one month shy of his 92nd birthday. Dr. Vanatta assembled the pieces of what would become WJLE in the early 1960′s. He, along with co-founders, Franklin H. (Chick) Brown, Aaron Durham, Hal Durham, Dr. C.H. Cope and Herman Spivey, founded the station, which was AM only to begin with, in April, 1964. Seven years later, WJLE added an FM frequency. ...

Pioneers edge Tigers, 19-16, to open season

Last Friday night was a tough night for the fans of DeKalb County football who have grown accustomed to seeing an offensive outpouring over the last few years.
