The Smithville City Council moved a step closer to adopting its budget for the new fiscal year, Monday night. The major issue holding up passage of the budget has been the wage scale, which both Mayor Taft Hendrixson and several members of the council have had issues with. Mayor Hendrixson proposed a new wage chart, which if adopted, would take effect in the new fiscal year budget. ESTES DeKalb County Sheriff Patrick Ray said Ricky Estes, 45, of Whorton Springs Road, Smithville, and Roxanna Landis, 26, of Andrews Street, Smithville, were both charged with aggravated robbery for their roles in the hold-up. Funeral services for Elsie Emaline Waldron Turner, 83, of Sparta were held Saturday, August 21, 2010, in the chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home in Smithville. Bro. Adam Scales and Bro. Dr. W.E. VANATTA The co-founder and long-time owner of WJLE Radio, Dr. Willius Eugene (W.E.) Vanatta, died at his residence, last Thursday morning after a short illness. He was 91 years of age, just one month shy of his 92nd birthday. Dr. Vanatta assembled the pieces of what would become WJLE in the early 1960′s. He, along with co-founders, Franklin H. (Chick) Brown, Aaron Durham, Hal Durham, Dr. C.H. Cope and Herman Spivey, founded the station, which was AM only to begin with, in April, 1964. Seven years later, WJLE added an FM frequency. ...
